Default Formula 1 adopts new points system for 2010 season

F1 bosses believe a seven-point gap between first and second place, rather than the current two-point separation, will promote a 'race-to-win' attitude.
Interesting... quite a dramatic change from last season's format of 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. The drivers appear to be in favour of it, but will the F1 fans feel the same? There is certainly a lot more incentive to win now as there's a 7-point gap between 1st and 2nd as opposed to 2 points before.

I will admit I prefer the new arrangement. Makes winning a race far more important.

It's better than what they were going to do it last year, where the driver that won the most races in the season wins the championship rather than on points.

thats how it should b the person with the most wins = champion , imagine never winning 1 race all season always 2nd place and winning the thing

But on the other hand you could win two races and come last in the rest of them and be champion.

Atleast this system gives a good advantage to the one that wins most races

I cannot see that happening. Someone has got to win the other races and get points from them I do not even know if that is possible even if all the other placings were shared equalling among ALL the other drivers. I am sure another single driver would soon pick up at least 3 wins from the remainder

The placings of the other drivers wouldn't make a difference. It could happen, there are 13 teams two drivers for each and there are 19 races. I know it's unlikely but i was just proving the point that someone could win a few races and then go on to come last in the majority of races but still be champion. The points system is a much better and fairer way, which is why they have decided to use it, i presume

cant see the issue to be honest here.
id tend to go for the simple option of, the one with the most points at the end wins?

it aint the drivers that set the rules, its the FIA, if it becomes a sham, im sure they will tweak it slightly.

I have mixed feelings here - on the one hand, I feel that increasing the gap between points will encourage a race to win attitude, which is good for the sport, but the difference in points lower down seems minor.

On the other hand, I do not have a problem with someone winning a title if they've never won a race. Surely the objective is to find the best overall driver. If that means you give the title to a guy who has consistently come second or third, rather than someone who has had a few first places, then that's not such a big deal. It would reward someone who has done consistently well, rather than someone who just happened to be really good on a handful of tracks. And surely that would make them, overall, the best driver?
